RY Celebrates PATHA’s Successful Challenge Against Puberty Blocker Ban

RainbowYOUTH supports the High Court ruling that regulations banning new prescriptions of puberty blocker medication for trans young people were unlawful.

The High Court's decision affirms what trans young people, their whānau and our wider communities have always known to be true, gender-affirming healthcare is a human right and access to these medications is lifesaving.

“The introduction of this ban placed further unnecessary distress on trans rangatahi and their whānau,” says RainbowYOUTH’s Kaiwhakahaere Matua (Director), Petazae Thoms. “Being able to focus our energy back to supporting whānau and their tamariki to access the healthcare they need is where our focus is best placed. Not being the stopgap for poor mental health outcomes due to discriminatory decisions.”

We mihi to PATHA (Professional Association For Transgender Healthcare Aotearoa) and the incredible work they have done by putting this challenge before the High Court. You can read PATHA’s full statement here: patha.nz/news
