  • How can I change my gender marker on the NZTA Drivers Licence Register?

Even though in New Zealand gender markers are not printed on the driver's licence, they are still recorded in the NZTA Driver's Licence Register.

Changing this is a very simple process. You can change your gender marker to M, F or X.

All you need to do is write your new gender marker on the application form when you’re applying for a new licence or endorsement.

If you aren’t making a new application soon but you’d like your gender to be updated you can call them on 0800 822 422 and they will be able to do that over the phone.

How can I change my name on my drivers licence?

If you want to change your name on your New Zealand Driver’s Licence, firstly you need to fill out this form.

You will need to go to your local NZTA Agency, which you can find here

You will need to bring with you:

    • The fee ($32.40)

    • Your completed application form

    • Your current Driver’s Licence (if you have it)

    • Evidence of Identity

    • Your current Driver’s Licence [If you have your old licence, you don’t need additional evidence of identity]

    • Your current New Zealand Passport

    • If you don’t have either of these, you can present a combination of documents that are detailed here (note: These need to be originals, you can’t bring copies)

Proof of your name change (This can be aProof of Name Change letterfrom the Department of Internal Affairs or your birth certificate showing your name change)

What if my old license or photo ID has a picture which doesn't match my current appearance?

The NZTA should not take issue with this but if they do - ask to speak with a manager. The Human Rights Act 1993 guarantees you the right to not be discriminated against. This means that you should not be asked for a higher level of proof of identity than any other person.

If speaking to a manager doesn't help, consider talking to your local Community law centre or other support agencies who may be able to advocate on your behalf.

  • Victoria University - It is free to get a new student ID at Victoria University if you have an official name change. Otherwise it is $21 to replace an old ID. If you have not officially changed your name you will not be able to get the name on the qualification changed however you can request a chosen name be used to call you on to the stage during your graduation ceremony.
