This role involves providing peer support to trans* youth and whānau. Supporting whānau will include whānau with children under 12, who are trans or questioning their gender. The Trans Peer Support Worker (TPSW) will provide peer support to trans youth and whānau across the wider Auckland region.
Full training, including detailed peer support training, will be provided. The TPSW will build strong relationships with service providers across the region, and be the go-to person for any young people or whānau seeking support or information around gender. They will maintain strong relationships with gender affirming healthcare providers across the region, to ensure smooth referrals to these services where desired and be able to provide accurate and up to date information about what is available.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Previous experience or understanding of youth support work (including social work or other care work)
Awareness of the needs of gender diverse, queer and intersex communities
Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Tikanga Māori
Good written and verbal communication skills
Compassionate and non-judgemental listening skills
Strong skills of critical self reflection
Able to self-manage and show initiative in your work
Strong time management and self-motivation
Lived experience as a queer, gender diverse, takatāpui or intersex person
Full driver's licence is preferred but not necessary
