2019 ASB Auckland Marathon

RainbowYOUTH is recruiting runners for the 2019 ASB Auckland Marathon to fundraise for our peer support programme, so young queer, gender diverse and intersex people in Aotearoa can make friends, develop their sense of self, and build resilience to face what can be a challenging world to navigate. Our goal is to raise $20,000.

Queer and gender diverse young people are over-represented in negative health and wellbeing statistics such as depression, self-harm, suicide, addiction and homelessness. Findings from the Youth’07 and Youth’12 surveys completed by the University of Auckland reveal:

  • 20% of students attracted to the same sex or both sexes reported making a suicide attempt within the previous year – 5 times higher than their heterosexual peers.
  • Students attracted to the same sex or both sexes had a more difficult time at school – they were three times as likely to be bullied every week at school compared heterosexual students.
  • Approximately 40% of transgender students had significant depressive symptoms and nearly half had self-harmed in the previous 12 months.
  • Nearly one in five transgender students had experienced bullying at school on a weekly (or more frequent) basis – this was nearly 5 times higher than non-transgender students.

Considering Aotearoa New Zealand’s high youth suicide statistics, there’s an especially high need to provide support for queer, gender diverse and intersex rangatahi.

Our peer support programme is working to change these statistics. Visit the peer support groups page to learn more about RainbowYOUTH peer support groups. There are several studies highlighting the effectiveness of peer support in increasing wellbeing and resilience, where peer support is shown to: be beneficial to both the provider and receiver of support, increasing self esteem and confidence; increase social networks and wellness; and reduce the use of crisis services and reduce feelings of isolation.

The programme costs us over $150,000 to run each year, so these funds would be a huge help!

Help us improve the health and wellbeing outcomes for queer, gender diverse and intersex youth in Aotearoa NZ, by signing up to run the 2019 ASB Auckland Marathon with RainbowYOUTH!
